Healing in Christian Liturgy in Late Antique Egypt: Sources and Perspectives

Abstract Health and healing were of constant interest for Christian communities in late antique Egypt. Accordingly, a broad range therapeutic rituals on offer by the clergy, monks, martyr shrines. Of all these, this paper explores prayers gestures performed substances consecrated liturgical context as well some related practices, with focus fourth fifth centuries, from which most relevant sources hail. Besides reconstructing rites themselves far evidence allows – including intercessions sick, laying hands, consecration oil (and water bread) anointing sick various contexts –, I also consider them interpersonal attempt to evaluate through lens medical anthropological placebo theories. With due attention methodological difficulties, argue that decline transformation after century may partially be explained their modest ‘placebogenic potential’ compared other ‘market healing’.
